Hello and welcome to Mourning Cloak’s K-pop flight!! I am Mourning Cloak and I am glad you could join me! Here's the podcast that relates to this Flight - https://open.spotify.com/episode/7j2UQMxCf203AxecfeOGnJ
Below are some of the highlights from the podcast, links to what I discussed in the podcast, and some visuals that cannot be provided in a podcast setting.
In the world of Enhypen this week, we’ve learned there’s a comeback happening soon. In K-pop a comeback is when a new album drops. Right now there is no official word on the date but @hyphenating (https://twitter.com/hypenating) is predicting 9/20!!! So what’s that mean for us?? Nothing yet. I’d love to post once a week, God willing, but sometimes life gets in the way. Or my ADHD 😂 Definitely not getting through their first two albums before the third comes but that means more music to love and reflect on is headed our way.
For today, we will start with their first album Border: Day One and the first track - Intro: Walk the Line. Here's a link to the YouTube playlist with this music. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLM9wwD-_4K3T1nXY6cMUp-RX4X4qWZOiW First video will be the actual music video, second is a video showing the lyrics and translations. I'll also add songs for anything else that I reference.
At first thought, I was worried about finding anything to talk about with this short clip, but I quickly found that was an unnecessary concern. Below I'll touch on a few of the connections I mentioned within the podcast.
"With the rugged woods at our back"
Hopping right into the track, the narrator is Jake, and the majority of it is in English. The lyrics start out "With the rugged woods at our back". Here he is discussing the woods as behind them, as their past.
This made me think of the hymn, The Old Rugged Cross" where the rugged wood, the cross, for Christians is what brought us forgiveness, allowing us to leave our old life behind.
"The long drawn out line that cuts across the vast land"
Later in the first part, Jake states "We walk the long drawn out line that cuts across the vast land, because the world carved us on this line." This line cutting across land creates the border these boys are traveling on towards the new life they will have.
The Bible speaks about borders frequently within the Old Testament as they discuss the many battles that occurred as the Israelites claimed the land of Canaan. Exodus 16:35 says "The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan." This border for the Israelites was a new life from the time wandering in the deserts.
Another border, while not described as a border, is the change for Christians through baptism. Romans 6:4 says, "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may living a new life." This new life sends Christians across the border from their past to their present and future with God.
"Because the world carved us on this line"
This part ended discussing carving. Carving within the Bible discussing primarily carving of idols or carving of the decor and items needed within the temple. This track mentions that the world carved them on the line, referencing their transition from trainees to idols with the assistance of the world - those who voted for them in iLand and the fans that support them.
Throughout the Bible, refining silver and gold through fire, and comparing it to refining the Israelites or Christians through the hardships they encounter that help to remove impurities. In Job 23:10, "But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold."
In the New Testament, I Peter 1:6-9 states, "In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls."
Italian
The next section of this track is in Italian and means "Walk the line". This could get interesting. Italian is not unheard of in K-pop. BTS's storyline involves Esmeraldo flowers, said to have been discovered in northern Italy. So we will see what other Italian is weaved in to the Enhypen universe as it continues and grows.
"To the unknown we run"
This line stuck out because I love the song "Oceans" by Hillsong United. The song opens up "You call me out upon the waters, the great unknown where feet may fail." This makes me think of the story of Peter walking on water to Jesus. Matthew 14:25-31 says, "Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It’s a ghost,' they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: 'Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.' “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water.' 'Come,' he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, 'Lord, save me!' Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. 'You of little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'"
I’m hoping our butterfly effect on this flight together will help to make the world better for all of us. Thank you for joining me on this flight and I look forward to our next discussion about the next song on the album!
